Set on an island in the St Lawrence, this is a hotel and entertainment complex wrapped around a building that began life as a world's fair pavilion. The architecture is the first thing anyone notices: angular, glassy, looking back across the water at the Montreal skyline. Dining runs from a buffet to a formal restaurant, and a cabaret room programmes shows through the year. The gaming floor occupies several levels of the pavilion and is one department of the property rather than its whole purpose.

A resort hotel carved into the slope above Niagara Falls, so that a great many of its windows look directly at the water. Guests reach it through a galleria of shops from the street above. There is a theatre used for touring concerts, a spa, a broad spread of restaurants, and a hotel tower whose upper floors are the reason most people book. The casino floor sits at the centre of the plan, but the property is organised around the view.

A riverside resort just outside Vancouver, close enough to the airport that it doubles as a conference and stopover hotel. Boats tie up at the marina; a large theatre hosts touring acts; the restaurants lean on the region's seafood. Rooms in the main tower are generous and many face the water and the mountains beyond it. The gaming floor is substantial, but so are the meeting rooms, and the property works hard at being useful to guests who never visit either.

A resort in the lake country north of Toronto, owned and operated by the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, with First Nations design running through its public rooms. Its entertainment centre is the largest draw for much of the year, bringing in touring musicians and comedians to an audience that arrives by coach as much as by car. The hotel has its own spa and a wide range of restaurants, and Lake Couchiching and the golf courses nearby fill the daylight hours.
